Looping is a big part of what i do, so i thought i'd put up a page about it.
Looping involves recording a segment of audio which repeats over and over again with the aid of some technology – either a delay device or a dedicated looping device.
It breaks down into two types...
Phrased looping:
This involves recording a phrase, or a riff and cycling it so that it repeats in tempo.
Then you can play over the top, or add more layers to it.
Textural looping:
This involves recording several layers of sound that cycle without any reference to a tempo.
It breaks down into two sub-categories...
Static textures or pads:
Once created, they always stay the same and never change
Evolving textures or soundscapes:
These constantly change and evolve over time
Okay...so how do you do it?
Well, i use these tools to create textures and soundscapes...
TC G-Force

This is a powerful sound shaping tool that i use to convert my regular guitar sound into something otherworldly and strange or beautiful.

TC D2

A very nice delay unit from TC - i often use this on a short delay with infinite feedback to create pads by swelling in a chord or some notes and just letting them ring...
This is a new looper designed by Bob Amstadt - it's basically like 8 stereo loopers in a single box, with the ability to reverse, change speed and "scramble" any of the 8 tracks at any time.
Thia is used to process the LP-1 loops...adding delay, reverb or various types of filters
Electrix Repeater
![]()
This is basically a sampler - 24 minutes of memory time divided over 4 tracks and the ability to change the pitch or speed of your recorded samples. I use this to create static textures mostly - the ability to pitch shift a loop opens up a lot of possibilities for unusual sounds.
Korg Kaoss Pad

This is used in the aux send of the Behringer mixer and so can be applied to any of the sound sources. I also use it for self-oscillating delays
